The Kimblewick mouthpiece is made of flexible, food-grade PU, which provides a warmer feel in the mouth even at lower temperatures. Inside the mouthpiece is a hidden metal core for extra security without compromising flexibility. The anatomically shaped mouthpiece follows the horse's natural mouth line and lies evenly over the tongue and larynx, while a slight tongue relief reduces pressure. The Kimblewick works in a similar way to a Pelham but with a gentler effect. It is ridden with a single rein and the leverage varies depending on which ring groove the rein is attached to. The lower the rein position, the stronger the pressure it exerts on the neck and lower jaw.
Size guide
If you already have a bit that fits your horse well, you can use it as a reference when choosing a size.
If not, measure the width of the horse's mouth by placing a mouth gauge or soft string in the mouth where the bit will be. Mark the ends and measure the distance. The bit should be wide enough for the rings to rest just outside the corners of the mouth.
- A bite that is too narrow can pinch and cause discomfort
- A bite that is too wide risks slipping from side to side
