Today, most horse owners are aware that the horse cannot get the necessary daily supply of vitamin E through the basic feed. All the muscles and organs of the body require oxygen to function. Oxygen is transported to the working parts of the body via the blood; when a muscle is at rest, its oxygen requirement is minimal. When the muscle is ordered to contract to perform a movement, energy and thus oxygen are needed, i.e. increased blood supply to the muscle. If there is a sufficient amount of vitamin E, a muscle can perform this work without complications. Vitamin E and selenium work together and protect muscles and nerve cells.

Vitamin E and Selenium enhance each other's functions. Treatment with selenium and vitamin E has been practiced for many years in veterinary medicine against muscle wasting.

To form new muscle protein (i.e.: build muscle), it is not only muscle protein synthesis that is important, but also muscle protein breakdown. This is a constant process in the body, and it is when protein synthesis is greater than breakdown that the muscle protein balance becomes positive and new muscle mass can be formed.
