Electrolytes are salts found in blood and body tissue, called ions. These ions are important for maintaining what is called the “voltage potential” across the membranes or walls of cells, which is crucial for the body’s ability to transport water between cells.

Horse sweat is what is called hypertonic, which means that the sweat contains a higher concentration of ions than blood and other body fluids. Horses that sweat lose many electrolytes and trace elements in addition to water. Hard-working horses can quickly develop electrolyte imbalance and dehydration as a result of sweating. Also keep in mind that horses normally lose fluid and electrolytes through breathing, urination and defecation. The normal daily requirement for a 500 kg horse is estimated to be between 20-40 grams of salt.
